What is this?

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are thinner than a human hair (usually 0.10-0.2 mm), and insertion of the needles is usually painless.

You may feel a slight sensation when the needle is inserted, like a pinch or plucking a hair.

Once the needles are placed, patients report a variety of sensations, including tingling, deep pressure, achiness, heaviness, and sometimes nothing at all. These sensations that accompany needling are called "hibiki" in Japanese, and different styles of acupuncture bring about different sensations; however the clinical efficacy does not depend on the intensity or type of "hibiki", so do not be concerned if you feel something in one session, but not in another.

What is an acupuncture treatment like?

For the treatment, specific points on the body are stimulated using needles inserted into the skin while you lie comfortably on a padded treatment table. Most people feel no or minimal discomfort during needling. The needles may be pulled out right away or retained, typically for 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the practitioner's style.

Other treatment modalities involve merely placing, pressing or stroking needles or metal tools against the skin. Acupuncture for infants and young children usually uses these types of techniques.

Moxibustion (the burning of mugwort on or near the body), electroacupuncture, cupping and bodywork are often added to the treatment to maximize the effect of acupuncture.

Are acupuncture and Moxibustion safe?

When practiced by a licensed, trained acupuncturist, acupuncture is extremely safe.

In Japan, acupuncturists are licensed by the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare after passing an examination and graduating from an accredited technical school or college. No other health care providers except medical doctors are legally allowed to practice acupuncture and moxibustion in Japan.

Only sterile and disposable needles are used at our acupuncture service so there is no risk of infection.

If you have a pacemaker, have a tendency to bleed or bruise easily, or if you are a hemophiliac or pregnant, you need to notify your acupuncturist before receiving treatment.

Japanese Acupuncture/Moxibustion treatment to Body and Face
Practice of Acupuncture/Moxibustion is concerned with restoring proper energy flow to the various organs, glands, and tissues of the body on the premise that most diseases are the result of malfunction of disrupted energy.

●The nature of the Acupuncture/Moxibustion treatment includes the following:
1) The treatment that the clients are going to take is either “acupuncture” or “moxibustion” or both.
2) Acupuncture is using “pre-sterilized disposable needles” to stimulate designated points on the skin by inserting the needles.
3) Moxibustion uses “moxa (dried plant called a wormwood)” or “alternative materials” to stimulate designated points on the skin by conduction of heat.

●Effects and Changes
This treatment affects your body in two ways;
1) “Immediate Change” takes place right after the treatment.
2) “Long-term Change” takes place in the next day or a few days after the treatment.
The speed of change depends on the individual.

Those complications include: infection, broken needles, bruise, shock, bleeding, and pneumothorax. Some patients may feel some soreness and numbness sensation following the treatment. Also, other patients may feel sleepy. Because of the needle insertion into the skin, capillary vessels and the muscle, “internal bleeding” and ”a little bleeding” sometime occur. It doesn’t mean “mistakes” or “mal-treatment” but just a “normal reaction of the living body”. This kind of “internal bleeding” rarely tends to “bruise”. And it will fade away and disappear within a week or within a few weeks. Finally, skin will be recovered by its own reviving power.

*Please be informed that there is a such a case to decline the facial needling for the clients who had a facial
laser treatment, chemical peeling or other cosmetic surgery right before the appointment.
*Please inform us in advance if you are concerned with the following matters.
Client who has been injected with hyaluronic acid or botox.
Client who has received a pacemaker or other electronic device transplant.
Client who is currently on medication with anticoagulation or with other medicine, and having a serious hemorrhagic disease.
Client who is pregnant or has a possibility of pregnancy.
